Why Me

From “Why Me?” to “What’s This Teaching Me?”

Life has a way of interrupting our plans without asking for permission. A setback hits, a door closes, or something falls apart—and the first question that rises is almost automatic: Why me? It’s a human response, born from pain, confusion, and a need to make sense of loss.

But while “Why me?” is understandable, it’s also a question that keeps us stuck. It looks backward, searching for blame, fairness, or a reason that may never fully satisfy us. And the longer we stay there, the heavier the moment becomes.

A subtle shift in perspective can change everything.

What’s this teaching me?

This question doesn’t deny the pain. It doesn’t pretend the situation is fair or easy. Instead, it invites curiosity where frustration once lived. It moves us from victimhood to agency—from feeling powerless to realizing we still have a choice in how we respond.

When we ask “What’s this teaching me?” we begin to see challenges as instructors rather than punishments. A failure might be teaching patience, resilience, or humility. A disappointment might be sharpening discernment or revealing what truly matters. A season of struggle might be building strength we didn’t know we’d need.

This shift doesn’t happen overnight. Some lessons only become clear with time and distance. But even in the middle of the storm, asking the right question can steady us. It reminds us that growth often comes disguised as discomfort.

The most grounded, wise, and resilient people aren’t those who avoided hardship. They’re the ones who learned how to extract meaning from it. They understood that life isn’t always about what happens to us—but about what happens within us because of it.

So the next time life asks something difficult of you, pause before asking “Why me?”
Try asking, “What’s this teaching me?”

That single question can turn pain into progress—and struggle into strength.
